Centre requests more information on Kochi Metro phase II before approval

Union Housing & Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday stated that certain details will be sought from the state government regarding the second phase of Kochi Metro Rail project. Only then steps will be taken to get the clearance from the Public Investment Board for the project. Under the Kochi Metro Phase II, the route stretches from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Kaloor to Kakkanad.
Hibi Eden MP apprised this. He came across the Minister with a petition to speed up the process for clearances of the Union Cabinet. Similarly, he requested clearance of PIB for the second phase of the project.
In addition, the MP notified that the 11.3 km stretch with 11 stations bears a lot of significance. It links to Infopark which includes 25,000 employees including techies, the Smart City which is also a major IT station and the district collectorate. Moreover, he mentioned that the stretch expects 50,000 passengers for Metro daily on an average. The phase II can make sure of safe journey for women at night in this route, Mr Eden stated. The project had received in-principle clearance last February.
Chalakkudy MP Benny Behanan, who was with Mr Eden, requested the minister to consider taking the third phase of Kochi Metro to Cochin international airport.
Kochi Metro Phase II
The 11.2 km-long route from JLN Stadium to Kakkanad will cover 11 stations in total. It has an estimated project cost of Rs 2310 crore. The extension will cover the stations Palarivattam Junction, Palarivattam Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Kunnumpuram, Kakkanad, Kochi CEZ, Chittethukara, KINFRA and Infopark-1.
